WORKPLACE LEARNING,
VERSION 2.0

INFORMATION GRAPHIC
13.08.2008

Last week, on the wiki page devoted to VizThink’s Visual Learning Group, Brent Schlenker asked others to collectively describe the move from Learning 1.0 to Learning 2.0. It’s an intriguing project. Consider this post my contribution. My aim is to inspire debate by putting some ideas on the table.

Given that the request is explicitly about visualizing the transition, I thought I’d put my information-design hat on and create an information graphic. A few weeks ago, I took my second workshop with Dave Gray, who’s company specializes in visualizing business processes. I decided to create a graphic in a style that’s similar to what Dave’s company produces. The disclaimer, of course, is that my abilities in this area remain very much under development. Consider this exercise part of my own second-generation learning.

This graphic was designed for printing on a colour laser printer on tabloid-sized paper (11×17 inches), although it looks better on slightly larger paper (12×18 inches being the next size up). I usually create poster-sized versions of this type of graphic, which is the ideal format because the viewer can clearly see all of the detail without having to squint.

Update (08.09.08)

VizThink has just released a Visualization in Learning Report that includes case studies related to this info-graphic. Two of the cases relate to work I’ve been doing to introduce visual explanations into executive learning and the use of card-based methods of dialogue. These were projects that were pretty much finished in the Spring. I’ve been doing some even more interesting stuff along these lines in the period since. Stay tuned.
